Chapter 5

The food came and everyone dug in. Too soon dinner was over and it was time to go.

“I have to go out of town next week, but I’d like to call you and make plans to get together when I get home,” Cutter said.

“Okay,” Zarifah said. She held out her hand. “Give me your phone.”

He handed it to her and she put her number in.

“Thanks,” he said.

“You’re not going into danger, I hope,” she said.

“Not next week,” he said. “I’ve got to go visit my grandmother. She’s eighty.”

“Aw, that’s sweet,” she said.

“But danger goes with my job,” he said.

She blinked, taking that in.

Might as well be totally honest with her from the start. No sugar coating anything. Only way to start a good relationship.

“So this ex fiancé,” he said. “Do you have a picture of him?”

“Why?”

“So I know what he looks like. To protect you.”

“Oh.”

“That’s what I do, sweetheart. Protect. Serve. Defend.”

She reached for her phone, scrolled through it and found the pic. Thrusting it away from her as if she couldn’t stand to look at it, she pointed it at him. “That’s him.”

“Got it. Thank you.”

“Oh! No, thank you.” She said. “For caring enough to want to protect me.”

“Always,” he said.

They gazed into each other eyes, the attraction strong.

He saw hope, trust and wariness as well as attraction in her eyes.

Well she didn’t know him well enough yet. And that was all right. This was a good start.

“Thanks for your number,” he said.

“You’re welcome,” she said. “Safe travels and enjoy your grandma.”

“Thank you. I intend to,” he said. “Stay safe, Edith Smith.”

Surprised, she realized she’d wanted to thank him for the flowers. He’d distracted her from that. “Thank you for the flowers,” she said.

“You’re welcome. Thank you for your dance,” he said and for inviting me to dinner with your friends.”

Everyone stood to leave and it got noisy as they all said their good nights.

When they came out of the restaurant, Cutter noted the black Mercedes again. This time, there were two men in the car and they were watching the building. Cutter’s senses went on immediate high alert.

There was no reason for the men to be sitting there watching them, unless their goal was to watch.

Someone was being followed. Neither of the two men fit the picture she had just showed him.

He wondered who the men were and who was being followed.

“Come over here,” he said to Zarifah and she followed him. He stood feeling the wind, so he could point her in the right direction to spray her pepper spray.

She had it in her hand as if she did not even know how to hold it.

He showed her how to hold it and how to spray it and then said, “You’ll want to note the wind so that it doesn’t blow back into your face.”

“How can I do that if he’s coming at me?” Her voice rose a bit with a degree of panic.

“You note it the minute you walk outside, then you’re ready. Not the minute you see a guy coming at you.
